CLASSROOM GUIDANCE

To supplement the classroom guidance provided by individual teachers, the school counselor can present topics requested by teachers which are pertinent to an event or situation.  Such topics addressed this academic year have been as follows:

·        Stopping Bullying Behavior, your role

·        Being a Good Friend

·        What It Means To Be Ethical

·        How to add Dr. Morey to your "team"

·        Character Values:  Christ-Centered, Honest, Ethical, Friendly, Students

 

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

This service, offered to any child, is short-term and related to school problems.  Students can receive this service by parent request, teacher referral or self-referral.  Confidentiality between the student and counselor is honored (except when the student indicates self-harm or harm to others).  Problems addressed often include self-esteem, dealing with feelings, handling changes at home, staying organized and being motivated to perform at your best.

GROUP GUIDANCE

Students participate at times in small groups designed to address specific issues.  Such groups are scheduled during the school day, last for about forty minutes a session and run  for six to eight weeks.

Groups offered include:

                                                Rainbows for All God’s Children (Children who experience loss due to death, divorce/separation)

Ending Bully Behavior

Friendship Skills

CONSULTATION

Upon request, the school counselor is available to assist parents and teachers with academic, personal, emotional, or social issues involving a child or other students.
 

ASSESSMENTS

The school counselor is a licensed child psychologist with over 20 years experience. Parents may consult with the counselor about having their child assessed by the VCSB or professionals in our community.  Also, the counselor can provide a pre-assessment for ADHD, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome, Aspergers Syndrome, oppositional-defiant disorder and conduct disorder, should these medical conditions be suspected.  After pre-assessment, appropriate recommendations and referrals can be made.

Positive Role Models  Features today’s “heroes” and teaches kids how they, too, can become a “giraffe,” one who sticks his neck out.
